The Victoria Racing Club has been slammed for allowing a racegoer to wear a dress covered in politically-charged slogans relating to the Israel-Gaza conflict. Angelica Mesisca Barrientos raised eyebrows at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday by wearing a black dress emblazoned with the words 'Free Palestine', 'Where Is The Humanity?' and 'Ceasefire' The slogans refer to Israel's retaliation against Palestine following the Hamas-led terror attacks on October 7. The VRC's rules of entry prevent racegoers from wearing slogans that it deems 'discriminatory', 'insulting' or 'offensive' to other persons present at the course. Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chair of the Anti-Defamation Commission, Australia's leading civil rights organisation fighting antisemitism, said 'there is no excuse for inaction' on behalf of the VRC.

From next Tuesday members aged 12 or above will be allowed to wear shorts - but only in the members area of Flemington. The shorts have to be tailored with a matching tie and jacket and they must sit on or below the knee. Veteran trainer Gai Waterhouse was shocked by the announcement, calling the idea'silly' and urging the VRC to stick with tradition.
